Vampire Diaries vs. True Blood

Which show do you like better?

I used to absolutely love True Blood. I thought season one was brilliant…funny, sexy, well-written , with a lot of social commentary thrown in. That opening montage? Where it shows the flash of the sign that says “God Hates Fangs?” I thought that was sheer genius the way it was a reflection of those horrible people who hold “God Hates Fags” signs. Yeah, season had it all and I loved it.

Season two was still pretty good although I felt like some of the characters were losing their complexity and just becoming jokes. But season three has been where it has all fallen apart for me and I can tell you exactly when it happened. There was a scene in one of the earlier episodes where Bill was having sex with Lorena and literally twisted her head around 180 degrees (you could hear the bones crunch) so she was facing away from him and continues on with the sex. Wow. It was just too violent for me, with too much hatred during an intimate act. Did it really have to go that far?

And that is the problem I think. Seems like some of the people behind cable TV shows are more concerned with how far they can take it, how much they can shock an audience than with how good a story they can tell. Nip/Tuck did it. Blood and Sand did it. And True Blood does it.

Then we have The Vampire Diaries. As far as I am concerned, this is a vampire show that gets it right. The storyline is interesting, the characters are complex and multi layered and the vampires are actually sexy. One fully clothed kiss on Vampire Diaries is INFINITELY hotter than all the jiggly bits on True Blood. And besides. I’m from Tennessee….all the vampires on True Blood remind me of my uncles. SO NOT SEXY.

And what a season premiere! I won’t give any spoilers, but if you saw it then you know how amazing it was. And if you haven’t watched the show before…..quit reading this and get thee to Netflix!!!!

So tell me, which show do you prefer?? Why?

Hmmm, I disagree but isn't it always the case?
I think you are comparing apples and oranges. True Blood is an adult show and Vampire Diaries is a YA show.
Now as far as True Blood is concerned, I thought season 2 was a total joke. It was all about the T & A. It went way way off the original book story line and it just pissed me off. At least seaon 3 is attempting to redeem itself and get back on track.
The scene you speak of involving Bill and Lorena was violent for sure BUT Bill's emense hatred towards Lorena could not be any better played out. I believe that was the point.
Anyway, season 3 is my favorite season so far but I read all the books too so I am aware of what the story line was suppose to have been. The books sucked but the story line was far better then where they were headed last season.
So there ya go. My 2 cents. Let me know when you get sick of hearing it!!! <3

Haha...never get sick of your two cents =)
I agree that True Blood is an adult show, but I don't think adult has to mean "let's get as violent and as naked as we can."
I still strongly hate that scene with Bill and Lorena. Expressing hatred through a sexual act virtually insured that I could never like his character again. And if I can't like the main characters on a show, there is no reason left for me to watch.

I also disagree. Although I think Bill is horrible person as well as a stick in the mud and Sookie is a pretty much the most insufferable character on the show, I really like it. The minor characters like Lafayette, Eric, Jessica, Hoyt, and all the rest really make the show for me. Bill and Sookie are pretty much made for each other and I hope the Eric/Sookie relationship is never played out onscreen because I would feel very sorry for Eric.

I watched the first season of the Vampire Diaries and I absolutely hated it. I grew up reading the books and I loved them. I feel like the characters are being butchered on the TV show. I felt that the characters (save for Damon) were all boring, flat, and predictable. Elena is particularly annoying because she was such a strong character in the book. There are only a total of 3 vampires in the books. In the show, vampires show up for an episode only to be killed and not really needing to be there at all.

I feel that True Blood is the more interesting of the two shows, even with its unnecessary nudity in just about every episode. I think the best episode yet is where Russel goes postal on national TV.

Interesting...most people I've talked to haven't really liked The Vampire Diaries books at all. I haven't read them so I can't compare of course.
And I WILL agree with you on the minor characters on True Blood, they're really the most interesting... I could certainly do without Bill and Sookie.

I actually gave up on True Blood after season 2 - it just wasn't working for me anymore. I LOVED the first season of Vampire Diaries and I hope they have a good season 2. Often with these shows the quality dips after one season, so I hope that doesn't happen here. I read the first two Vampire Diaries books, and they were not for me, but I think the show is awesome!

I completely agree! I am not a fan of the VD books and was really happy when the show did not follow the storyline. I never got into True Blood for two reasons 1.) HBO and 2.) I could see right were it was headed... to being way to trashy and brash for my taste. I completely agree that a clothed kiss in VD is ten times hotter than the raunchy stuff you typically get on HBO shows.

You know, I love both The Vampire Diaries, and True Blood, but I have to admit that sometimes True Blood is seriously cringe-worthy. I think The Vampire Diaries, though more mainstream, appeals to me on so many levels...not to mention the eye candy haha
